MILIES & VIZITSA

MILIES.jpg (21611 bytes) Milies was once a great cultural centre for this part of Pelion and it is said that, when Pelion revolution against the Turkish ocupation began, Milies was at the centre of the affair.

Even today, Milies remains a creative refuge for artists and literary people.

It is one of the most authentic of the Pelioritic villages.

One 100 years ago the narrow guage railway of Pelion was built. Today, many years after the closure of the line, it has started running again.

Now it runs from Volos to Milies through lush green valleys, narrow gorges, into small tunnels and over arched bridges.

There is a long iron bridge as you approach Milies Station, and it is close to here, according to myth, that Chiron the Centaur had his cave.

vizitsa.jpg (18663 bytes)

Vizitsa is another village in the Pelion style with many mansions built of stone and stucco.
Stone walls and cobbled paths blend in with the surrounding nature to make a harmonious whole.

Also in this area are the villages of Pinakates, built in the style
of Northern Greece, and Drakia, which was built by master craftsman from Epirus
in Western Greece.

All three of these villages, despite their different styles, manage to form a harmony with their surroundings that is not found in our modern way of building.
