ZAGORA, HOREFTO & POURI

ZAGORA.jpg (11962 bytes) Zagora is the largest village of Pelion and is actually four villages strung together along the main road. There are three platias (or squares) each with its own church.

Zagora looks out over the Aegean and, on a clear day, you can see north to the Holy Mountain of Agios Oros, commonly known as "Mount Athos".

In the 17th and 18th centuries, Zagora was at its commercial and cultural peak and is the home of many large mansions built by wealthy traders in this time. Quite a few of these mansions have been renovated as hotels and are impressive places to stay.

Ships left from the harbour of Horefto, below Zagora, and silk from this area was famous all over the .

In Zagora is a library with many thousands of rare books of great interest.
Following the road towards Horefto, just outside Zagora is the school of Rigas Ferreos which was the oldest school on Pelion.

Just before the school is a dirt road to the left which leads to Villa Horizonte. This is a comfortable villa with rooms for rent and also offers speciality holidays, exhibitions and cultural events. See their web pages at Villa-Horizonte.

Six miles north of Zagora, is the village of Pouri which has remained virtually untouched by any effects of tourism. From the church square there are magnificient views right along Aegean the coast of Pelion to Horefto, Ag. Saranda and Agios Ioannis.

Below Pouri is the beach of Elitsa and going north out of the village leads you to some beautiful walks among the beech trees and chestnut trees and even to a trout stream. Ask Wolf of Villa-Horizonte to lead you there.

HOREFTO.jpg (18956 bytes) Follow the road to Horefto through vast apple orchards (the main product of the area) until the vegetation changes to olive groves and more mediterranean softness, and you reach the small port town and beach of Horefto.

At Horefto is a beautiful white beach and the clear blue waters of the Aegean.

Like all the beaches on the Aegean side of Pelion, Horefto Beach never becomes crowded. If you want even more seclusion, there is a small green path leading from the north side of the village to the deserted, sandy beaches Parisena and Analipsi.

There is a small port with a harbour wall which offers some shelter to shipping in rough weather.

From Horefto, a small twisting road follows the coast to the long and unexploited beach of Ag. Saranda.
Another similar road takes you to the popular beach and village of Agios Ioannis.
